James Powers’ higher education began at the USC School of Architecture & Fine Arts. His range of inquiry while at the university expanded to other fields, including anthropology and geology. When he completed his studies, he began to explore the vast area of the Southwest: California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Mexico. Wherever he explores, Powers seeks to uncover the story of the people through their cultures and the story of the land through its minerals. On his journeys, he always has his eyes open for unique stones. Bringing these choice, timeless relics back to his studio, he begins the process of more fully revealing the story of the people and the land though his artistry. While arduous and time-consuming, this process brings forth unique objects of beauty that express an anthro-geological harmony. Powers’ chief artistic influencers are Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, and Isamu Noguchi. |
