Collection of original paintings by Jo Cunningham For Inquiries: johnmichaelpowers@aol.com |
Jo Cunningham is a landscape painter who lives in Albuquerque, N.M. While currently retired, she was a licensed landscape architect practicing in both southern and northern California. During her professional years, she travelled throughout the Tuscan region of Italy and was captivated by its imagery. The collection of paintings is based on photographs taken from mostly remote roads and obscure paths in California and Italy. The landscape in both locations has intricate layers of history embedded in it. These paintings are Cunningham’s effort to mark her own time in the land. Her hope is that the viewer will do the same. |

Artist Statement
For a couple of decades the subject matter of my paintings has been landscape. I have been specifically interested in creating a sense of three dimensional space with marks on a flat piece of canvas. Usually your eye can move through a spatial sequence formed by the painting strokes as they mark out grounded plane and sky.
I try to have the marks land in such a way that you might see different things when you look at them; they are just marks, not drawings. They may coalesce to make landscape images but there will often be some ambiguity in what exactly is depicted. I have an emotional connection with landscape that clings to the canvas along with the painted brush strokes.
Recently I have been playing with ways to react to the apparent movement of light in landscape. Light moves with the clouds and mists. Trees and grasses sway; shadows dance; the eye moves through the picture plane; vision is aswirl. |
